Lent and Easter at Emmanuel

From Palms to Passion: From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday

Have you ever wondered how the date of Easter is determined? Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21 (day after first day of spring). That is why Easter changes each year. This year, Easter is April 21.

The season of Lent is the 40 days (or 46 including Sundays) before Easter.

Lent is a time for us to spend in personal reflection and examination of our walk with God and those things that have separated us from him. Lent is a dedicated time to surrender these “sins” to God.

We begin Lent with an Ash Wednesday Service on March 6.

Our Worship series for the Lent season is “From Palms to Passion”.

This year during Lent, we will look at Jesus’ life as he walks towards the cross, and we remember the challenges, sacrifices, and sufferings he experienced along the way.

We will do that by spending each Sunday of Lent on a specific day of the week leading up to Easter, which is called Holy Week.

The first day will be Sunday, March 10 on which we will celebrate “Palm Sunday” by reading Mark 11:1-10. There will be a special processional with the children waving the palm branches followed by the handbells and choir.

Each Sunday we will move “From Palms to Passion” as follows:
March 10- Palm Sunday, Mark 11:1-10
March 17- Monday, Mark 11:12-19
March 24- Tuesday, Mark 12:28-34
March 31- Wednesday, Mark 14:1-11
April 7- Maundy Thursday, Mark 14:12-42, 66-72
April 14- Good Friday, Mark 15:1-15, 21-32
April 21- Easter Sunday, Mark 16:1-8

Hope you join us as we experience the passion of Jesus and anticipate the joyous resurrection of Easter!
