Lookin’ for Love in All the Wrong Places: A Worship Series for Lent

“All we need is love!”

Well, there may be some other things we need, but certainly we humans can feel when love is in short supply. There is a “hole” we feel when we think we don’t have enough love. So we start to try to fill the hole with… what?

There are so many ways to think about, talk about, read about, love.

Love can be defined as those things we pay attention to, those things we adore, those things we think are as important as breathing to us (we just “gotta have it”).

The Christian scriptures offer many images of where love, grace, forgiveness, righteousness, and healing can REALLY be found. And it is not in the “usual” places.

Isn’t it as true of us today as it was of the scriptural authors? Don’t we often look for wholeness and happiness in places that offer only temporary “good feelings” and satisfaction?

Lent is a wonderfully reflective time to reassess where we are searching for meaning and purpose. We’ll move through stories of Jesus to find out who offers the “real deal.”

I invite you, as Lent continues, to notice what you think about, focus on, and give your attention to most. It can be a way of helping each of us reprioritize and recalibrate.

Lent is often a season when we think about giving something up. This Lent, perhaps what we can give up is our oblivion to the obsessions that steal our attention, and therefore our love. In giving up oblivion to these things, we can become aware of what really matters and be “intentional about our attention.”

All of this leads to new plans for Holy Week this year. The worship team is hard at work creating new worship experiences for the Thursday and Friday of Holy Week.

The Thursday night service (6:30 PM) will be a “Feast of Love” in the fellowship hall sitting around tables as we experience Jesus’ last supper with his disciples in a totally new way. On Good Friday, our service will be at 12 Noon in the sanctuary as we focus on the sacrifice through love that Jesus made that day on the cross. I hope you will plan to attend both special events.
